Handcrafted in Chulucanas,Peru. 15 cm High
This piece from Chulucanas, Peru is handmade based on ancestral techniques from the pre-hispanic cultures Vicus and Tallan using a "paleta", a flat wooden tool to paddle softly clay, "river stones" to obtain an homogeneous surface rubbing by hand and "mango leaves" to obtain the well-known "negative" or black color just as their ancestors did. These leaves are used not only as fuel but also to produce smoke that will dark the pottery, and a resin which adheres to the ceramic giving it the characteristic Chulucanas style. The burning process is done twice, and even 3 times, until the desired dark shade is obtained. It may range from various browns to solid black.
These ceramics are for decorative purposes only, and not to use to hold water. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight and use natural waxes to maintain the polish and shine.
