Antique Oak Wood Mortise and Tenon Upholstered Rocking Chair - Circa Late 19th Century
$158
Excellent Antique Pre-Owned Condition. Pickup in Olathe. No Holds.
After being the highest bidders at an estate auction, we were elated to acquire this gorgeous rocking chair from a lovely 97 year old lady’s estate who was downsizing; her family was the chair’s original owners. The Victorian-inspired look and mortise and tenon joinery is what drew us to the chair. It starts with the oak veneer moulded plywood cresting rail onto the lovely curved arms, which are joined and “flow” into the curved front legs; capped off with the oak wood’s original wax finish which has a beautiful aged patina. Fabric on the upholstered seat and back is in great shape done in a luscious chartreuse striated velvet (not sure if original or not + note, one very faint spot the size of a baby lima bean that is barely discernible). The stuffed seat has hand-tied springs (1 string is broken) and a plush “springy” feel. I wasn't really aware of how antique furniture’s upholstery was traditionally padded with several different types of organic materials and it’s not uncommon to find straw and horse hair in upholstered furniture along with cotton as a base layer. There is a spot underneath the seat where the lining has pulled away slightly so that we were able to peer into that area and noticed what appears to be a combination of straw or moss, hair (horse?) and cotton stuffing. In solid structural shape with the typical "bumps and bruises" of life that a piece of this age should have but in no way impacts its integrity or beauty. There is no makers label or mark only what appears to be a series of numbers made by a branding or marking iron underneath.
Features:
Materials: Solid oak wood frame/rockers; oak veneer moulded plywood cresting rail; striated velvet fabric; hand-tied springs; mortise and tenon joinery; stuffed seat (appears to be a combination of straw or moss, hair (horse?), cotton)
Dimensions: 42” x 33” x 22” H/D/W; seat -20” x 20” x 3” W/D/H; seat to floor -16½”; back -29” x 18” H/W; arms -9” x 16” H/L
