Martial Arts Training (Private & Small Groups)

Learn self defense and martial arts technique and possess the same skill, confidence and ease you already possess with drinking a cup of tea. When you no longer have to think about the action of drinking a cup of tea, you have mastered that action.

Offering genuine and traditional private and small group martial art and self-defense lessons -- taught the traditional way

The physical and mental health benefits are extensive -- weight loss, strength building, stamina, endurance, balance, sharpened reflexes, enhanced coordination, cardiovascular conditioning, increased bone density, self-control, self-discipline, unbreakable spirit, confidence and the list goes on.

Please note : The student dropout rate among martial art schools is very high. Most join with the knowledge that exercise is required but then learn that a considerable amount of exercise is needed in order to condition the body in many different ways. For this reason, many instructors will not push their students in hopes they will reduce the dropout rate. Schools lose revenue when students fail to return, so they will often compel you to sign a contract. This way if you dropout, you still have to pay for the duration of the contract you signed. If you sign the contract and don't like the training, then you lose money! I don't work that way.

You see, revenue is not my primary motivation, so I will not teach lessons with diminished intensity to ensure your comfort. I simply won't do it! You will be trained according to your physical ability (not according to your mental endurance or you tuition). Understand there is absolutely no substitution for the amount of exercise and conditioning that is required or for the amount of repetition it takes to be a martial artist.

And for those individuals who are already athletic and in excellent shape and who learn certain techniques quickly, how will you do when under extreme pressure? Just because you can execute a strike with power, doesn't mean you will have the necessary timing, reflexes, application knowledge, proper distance to target and all the things that instill confidence in you. Without confidence in your ability, confidence from knowing, confidence that only comes from experience, any confidence that you do have may quickly erode; you may buckle!

Becoming a martial artist is a process. Anyone who tells you differently is not telling the truth.
When you eat with a fork do you think about it? No. You have picked up that fork so many times that eating with one requires no thought.
Once trained, if you are confronted and must defend yourself, thoughts can be centered around assessing the threat level and with diffusing it without force- Defending yourself should come naturally and with confidence. This state of mind is acquired from experience.

So for me it's not about the tuition; it is about the art. It is about you, and once you are trained, the art is yours to keep for life and to perhaps pass down.

As for mental ability, you may think you are going outside your range, but that is why it is important to have an instructor who knows how the mind loves to put limits on you. It is my job to know when to override your brain's desire to stop or rest. Years of experience are behind my ability to carefully assess your mental and physical state. So you may be taken beyond where you think you can go, but you simply will not go beyond where you can go.

You will be disciplined. You will persevere. Your body will be hardened. Your mind will be strong. You will be proud.

I am often asked, "how long will it take to be good"? That depends on your ability to endure what it takes to be a true martial artist. Listen, you cannot take a few lessons and expect to perform complex techniques with power, accuracy, timing and form. As already stated much effort and work goes into conditioning your body and preparing it for the road ahead. It takes time, patience and perseverance. I cannot stress this enough. As a beginner you will feel lost and at times frustrated for not grasping the early foundation building techniques as quickly as you think you will but the good news is, you will. And as you begin to master these techniques the intensity of your workouts will increase. Eventually your coordination will be refined and your workouts will be brutal... but you won't even notice

What questions should you ask before committing to taking lessons from anyone?

Do your homework. There are many schools and instructors available but few truly understand what they are teaching, and how to teach it properly. I know the reason and application behind every technique I demonstrate and teach

Look the instructor directly in the eyes and trust your gut and your instincts! Do not be influenced by flashy advertisements and outrageous claims. If it sounds outrageous, it probably is

Watch, observe, be respectful, but ask questions. You want an instructor who is confident, but not cocky; accomplished but not arrogant; spirited, but also humble.

Martial Arts, an evolving industry

Marketing efforts are highly compelling and modern commercialization of the arts is widespread. But the reality is, you can be a world class martial artist whose school or training ground is located under a tree, in the dirt, with your focus pad consisting of nothing more than a dancing leaf in the wind. You take your art with you no matter where you go, and your training facility is where you are standing.

Parents: Are you a parent wishing to enroll your child? Ask yourself these questions :

Can I quietly observe my child in a highly disciplined environment?

Will I at any point be concerned with the typical and traditional disciplinary demands placed on my child such as push-ups or other disciplinary activity used to instill focus, obedience, order as well as to promote self-control, courtesy and respect?

I have taught many children successfully and if they respect you, they will learn from you. If they do not respect you, well, you're wasting your time and money, bottom line. If you are concerned with seeing your child disciplined and/ or humbled, than I am not the trainer for your child.

I do not run a daycare operation and I am not a babysitter. I am martial arts instructor commissioned to train and teach you or your child all the benefits and virtues associated with the art. I will do my job and do it well.

Your child will become a martial artist hardened physically and mentally and will sweat, strain, run, jump, kick, get sore, complain, bow and show respect to others and yes, he/she will have fun and be proud of his/her accomplishments; you will be proud too.

So here are my rules: You will NOT holler at your child from across the room or field demanding he/she follow my instructions. Instead, I will holler at your child and demand his/her attention. If you are ok with this, than I will accept your payment and teach your child.

If you break this rule I may require that you do pushups; lots of them!

Don't worry. My methods work and I have deep respect for our children.

Pricing (No contracts):

Lessons are private or by appointment and availability is flexible. Couples, small or large groups will of course, be less costly. Price will be adjusted according to your availability. Let me know what your needs are and what you're hoping to accomplish.

Atire: T-shirt (plain black is best), workout pants, cross-training shoes - the karate outfit from that other school - I don't care - as long as you're comfortable and it doesn't restrict movement or stretching in any way.

Training Environment 1: Outdoors - You will run, jump, climb hills, run up and down huge cement steps, learn basics - lots of basics for a strong foundation, do kicking drills, blocking drills, offensive/defensive hand techniques, hand/foot combination drills, learn protocol and self-defense techniques, lean theory of power, speed, application. Learn how to attack, defend, when to, when not to.

Training Environment 2: Indoors - Hanging bag/focus pad workouts, technical training, form training, stance training, impulse training, combination technique drills, lots of kicking (all kicks from spinning, to crescent, to ax kicks to jumping back kicks), yelling. Lots of hand techniques (lots). Running, flying kicks (advanced students), controlled 1-step sparring techniques (advanced students), relaxation techniques, stretching, theory, and much more.

Conclusion:You will learn to be like a cat: lightning fast, strong, accurate, agile, stealthy, and you'll eventually possess the ability to disable an opponent quickly.

Once you're trained and you find yourself in an aggressive situation, you'll be at peace and able to select your options with a clear mind that in most cases will involve no physical action. Your calm appearance, your true air of confidence, your piercing direct eye contact, and your relaxed demeanor has a very confidence eroding effect on others, a byproduct of true martial arts training.
