The maximum output is made to cut the bottom leaves as they come which will reduce slug damages (they get attracted by rotten leaves). Home grown lettuces tastes a lot better than those from any store, even better than the organic lettuces we can buy.

It can survive to -6C. It can be started indoor and then planted out in late April if there is no plastic, boxes, or jugs to cover them overnight when there is a frost forecast. If there is protection, it can be planted out as early as early April. I have planted some of mine out in early March in a cold frame. They are doing very well.

The second and third show photos of seedlings that will be transplanted out in 10 days into low tunnels and cold frames. Low tunnels can protect plants from rabbits. When weather is warm, insect net can be used to continue the protection from insects and rabbits.

The forth photo is the low tunnel which could overwinter some lettuces, allows spinach to be seeded the year before to germinate in early spring, and to grow many vegetables early. Early vegetables get less slug damages. Since April is the most expensive month to buy vegetables, it is a good idea to grow them early. In march, the sun is strong enough to support growth.

The fifth photo shows how to cover plants with fleece. We can use anything to cover them.

If allowed to set seeds, we can get lot of seeds from each plant for next year’s planting.
